I have a question about this item. It looks like an imperforated Scott # 37 from Netherlands. Scott says that imperforated versions of this stamp are proofs. This stamp is postaly used. Nice clear cancelation. Were proofs postaly used. And in 1885, years after the introduction of the stamp (when you could expect any proofs to be used up). Any thoughts.

No, these proofs were not postally used. Maybe a cutout from a postal stationary?

The stamp above was cancelled in 1883, seven years after its introduction. It looks to be a proof in the chosen color, and lists in the Dutch NVPH catalog for fl. 200,00.

The rate at change-over was about .45 Euro to 1 guilder.

Aaah, the good old guldens... Such a shame they robbed us from our currency that we had since medieval times. And with the euro they keep on robbing us...but that's a whole other story.

My own Dutch catalogue (although it is also from the gulden era and is thus outdated) specifically states that proofs of this stamp were not postally used. This in turn makes me wonder if this is in fact a proof. Still leaning towards postal stationary.

I believe this is it:
$40 for the full postal card intact - so my guess is about 25 cents or so as a used cut square.

Tinus my Dutch relatives would agree with you...when my wife first took me to Holland it was 3 Guilders to the dollar...we really had no money but the dollar stretched far...ah for the good old days when a new herring or a glass of pils was a guilder !!

Klange, a card like ebay's, without philatelic uprating and 4-color franking - $2 or so. Philb, yours is one of the Michel varieties on rose paper, worth a slight premium.
