I came across the following auction description related to Canada Scott#15 (5c beaver) and Canada Scott#22 (1c large queen). It is an an interesting juxtaposition in relation to the issue combination and the date of confederation, however, I think the description below is wrong: Quote: 15,22: 1˘ brown red, plus 5˘ Beaver (paying the double letter rate) tied by Peterboro 9 AP 1868 duplexes to slightly reduced cover to Toronto, dated NINE DAYS AFTER CONFEDERATION with next day receiver on reverse, a most attractive and RARE TWO ISSUE FRANKING (only 17 recorded) Does anyone else see an error (this is one of those times when one hopes one is not embarrassing oneself)?

Obviously the seller doesn't know how to spell July. Or the year of Confederation, for that matter. Not a student of history, I suppose. |

Well, what I know of Canadian history could be written n the nose of a very small beaver, but Stanley Gibbons seem to think that the Confederation occurred in July 67 evn though the large queens didn't appear until March he following year. |

I wouldn't be too hard on the describer of the lot.
On July 1, 1867, the colonies of the United Province of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia formed the Dominion of Canada. Postal services continued pursuant to colonial legislation existing prior to Confederation until April 1, 1868 when the Dominion of Canada's Post Office Act came into operation.
It seems that the describer believed that both Confederation and the Post Office Act came into effect on April 1, 1968, It's not an unreasonable assumption unless the describer is Canadian.
The cover then is an early example of the newly introduced letter rate and usage of the Large Queen issue.
The correct description should have read "9 days after the Dominion of Canada Post Office Act came into effect".

This is the closest I have come to "marking papers" or having my own reality show.
Bamra1 - 9.5 for being right but not being specific enough. Lorddenning - a perfect 10 for a complete answer (your continued presence should maintain the gene-pool and may, indeed, augment it. Bujutsu - thanks for cheering them on and for keeping the thread from disappearing and while I have your attention - does the Seguin have its own ship cancel and if not did it ever have one? |

Hi Cynical In answering your question, I have to say, yes and no <G>. The cancellation with the RMS Segwun listed specifically was discontinued several years ago. Now the cancellation reads "Muskoka Fleet" because the Segwun, Wenona and the Wanda III now in operation. The Wenona III is hired out for special occasions only and the other two steamers still have regular runs. I will try to hunt up an example of the latest cancel for you and post it in here. In the meantime, this is the image of the last one that was used specifically with the RMS Segwun in it. Chimo Bujutsu |

I was going through some of my Muskoka postal history boxes and pulled this card out with a hammer that does not use the name of the RMS Segwun on it. This one states "Muskoka Fleet" This is NOT the most current one though. I still have to dig that one out Will try to find the latest one. Chimo Bujutsu |

Bujutsu: the Segwun would make a great thread on its own. It might draw out a whole bunch of stuff from shoe boxes related to the boat service and perhaps the various post offices around the lake itself. |
