This post is where I need assistance from the stamp experts. I recently acquired a beautiful small 1920s Sears Roebuck and Company pocketwatch cardboard shipping box, which has its company's name along with its nice advertising slogan "World's Largest Store" that I had recently acquired from ebay. Sears Roebuck and Company had first started using this slogan in 1924 and stopped using it in 1931.

This small package box has a 3 cent Lincoln precancel stamp with also a ink overprint "Chicago" on it. Is this stamp a Scotts #635, which I believe it is or a Scotts #555, which I don't believe it is because I don't think they they were using this specific type of precancel stamps back then ? Please note that I can't find my clear plastic perforation gauge at the moment right now because of our recent move and is still packed away somewhere.

I had managed to finally find my stamp perforation gauge that was boxed away and was able to measure the box's affixed stamp perforations, which was 11 x 10.5. Therefore, it is definitely a Scotts #635 stamp, which was first issued in 1927.

Here is a pleasant surprise. I just opened up the box and also found a small pocketwatch instruction pamphlet inside, which has a date code of August 18, 1927 that is printed on the back, which means that this box was probably shipped sometime around late 1927 to 1928.

Here is a very beautiful 1894 postmarked advertisement mailing envelope. you will also notice that the affixed stamp has only a very faint smudge ink mark on it, instead of the regular cancellation marks across it ?

As I was unpacking the boxes from my recent move, I came across an interesting item. It is another one of my 1927-28 Sears Roebuck and Company mailing envelopes that also has the same precancel affixed stamp (Scotts # 639) type as my prior posting showing my 1927-28 Sears Roebuck and Company advertising shipping box with a precancel stamp (Scotts # 635).

I also found while unpacking, my great-grandfather's 1886 RW Sears Watch Company- Illinois Pocketwatch. He originally started to work from them in early 1887 that was located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, before moving its location to Chicago in late 1887. Richard W. Sears had never manufactured his own pocketwatches. He would buy out older outdated and unsold lots from the Illinois Watch Company at a discounted price and then have them engraved on the back side of the pocketwatch movement with his own model name and also company name. My great-grandfather's RW Sears Watch Company pocketwatch is the "Richard" model and it still works. Even though it is not considered to be very expensive (probably worth around $200), but it is definitely considered to be a treasure to me because of my great-grandfather's family history. I am also hoping to eventually acquire a 1887 RW Watch Company typed (unsigned) advertisement letter with its envelope and have it displayed with my great-grandfather's collection that I now proudly own and cherish.
