As far as I know and have seen Canada never used the service over print on large queens or anything else for that matter. My first quess is this is a faked ovpt but what would be the point other than to make me wonder and post it here. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

The overprint is very much like India #O16 to O21. Canada never used anything remotely resembling this stamp. It might have been a counterfeiter's "practice" stamp for forging the Indian officials, which are mostly of nominal value, hardly worth bothering with, except #O17.

It would not deceive a collector of India, however, as the font is slightly off.

India is first thing that crossed my mind - However doesn't make much sense as a practice pc for forgery when there are so many lesser value stamps to play with. Not that its high value even without but an oddball choice to experiment with. Can't really tell if the ovpt is on top or below cancel. Wonder if Canadian offices in India back then would use simular practices for official mail even though not generally accepted ?

None of the Large Queens were ever overprinted "SERVICE" . This is a bogus obviously. Still worth keeping though for the sake of pointing this out.

I can't speak for Canada but in Britain Civil Service departments won't experiment with ANYTHING for the first time without express orders in triplicate written in blood on parchment and signed by a peer and two bishops.

Ahhh thats what the smell is on parchment- its Corgi piddle!
So no chance the british consulate ran out of stamps and borrowed one from the Canadians I guess. Guess this could have a home on the makes no sense page.

I'd say that overprint is #2, and not #1.
