Over the 42 years I have been collecting revenues, this type of cancel has always been known as a punch cancel. I am sure that the term is far older than that.

Thank you revcollector for your expertise and I presume as I said it was with a hand held punch and they used whatever punch face was at their grasp...Even if it was a punch of say "mickey Mouse".........?

They were probably have been something the size and shape of a desk stapler. In the US, the holes were mostly round or diamond shaped, but Canada has several unusual shapes. The primary object was to make sure that the stamp could not be cleaned and reused, given that $1 US in 1865 was equal to about $14 today. Even a penny was real money then.

I find it interesting what revcollector says about Canada using a variety of punch shapes.
Not meaning to hijack you thread, wert, but it might be informative to see how many shapes we can find here.

Here is a triangle on an Ontario 10c stamp similar to yours, and a spade/arrowhead shape on a Quebec 10c law stamp.

jamesw....That is a great idea you have there.

IF ANYONE HAS A LAW STAMP, POST PICTURES TO SEE HOW MANY DIFFERENT PUNCH DESIGNS WE CAN ACCUMULATE. AND NOT JUST LAW STAMPS IF ANYONE FINDS OTHERS.

Following up on the discussion of the Quebec Law stamp, Iam enclosing another, but with traditional cancel. Just curious, do these have any value? I realize it is 'non-postal.'

Also have a 'hand cancel.' From previous post, I'm assuming minimal value. Comments?

Also have some 'perfins', which I will post shortly.

LAW STAMP: pre-Confederation Law Stamp on manuscript. Any more info on History of the use of these unique 19th century law stamps would be welcomed.
