Finally managed to get a good deal on this one and had to pull the trigger. Actually think this is undervalued in catalog for how seldomly they come up. Not sure about the blue line that seems to run up through left 8 - wether its from printing or not.

Hello Nitrolures That is a pretty decent looking stamp. The vertical blue streak at the left looks loke an ink smear which, although uncommon, is not rare. In all liklihood, that stamp is unique as you will probably not find another with an identical flaw. Congratulations. GJP |

WT - Ummm how do you open the book? All I see is the index but no links to actually open. Do I need to register then add to library? I have a hardcover book about Canadian special delivery and opened it up to see if the registration was included. It was not however I did notice where a impression stamp was used on newspapers directly on top of the newsprint. Ironically I just looked at a pomeroy that had newspaper text as the back and thought it was just a clipped picture from an old newspaper. I'll start a whole new thread on that but thanks for making me dig out that book. |

The line through the 8 might be part of a crayon mark which was used on registered letters. |

Found PDf of the book WT mentions above and it clearly states that there was a recall of the 8c reg stamps when the rate dropped to 5c . Approximations are that far less than 100,000 were ever in the publics hands . Great read and explanation as to why these don't come up often . My 2007 unitrade shows qty printed for the 2 and 5 cent rates but not the 8 . Not sure what recent catalog values are but unless these simply do not come up at auction enough to justify a catalog increase this one should warrant a higher cat value |

Nitro: 2012 Unitrade does not indicate a qty for the 8 cents.
As for the undervalued part of the stamps, it seems that a mint copy of this stamp as augmented in value quite a bit in the last decade. In 2002, it was listed at 600$ + a never-hinged pricing factor of 200% (1800$). In the 2012 it's listed at 900$ + a never-hinged pricing factor of 400% (4500$). So a MNH copy of this stamp as more than doubled in value, not many stamps have done that well in the last 10 years. Maybe undervalued, but still a really good ratio if you ask me.

The Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain (CPSGB) did an article in their second issue (Dec 1946) re Canada's registration stamps and said this about the 8c Canada Scott#F3: Quote: The scarcest of the stamps is, of course, the 8c value. It is particularly scarce in used condition, and Holmes warns against forged cancellations. |

The used catalog valuation was what I figured was low considering all the evidence. The 6-7-8 ring circle cancel is probably the easiest to forge but was also in period . At first I thought the blue line was an ink smear but it also makes sense as hand cancel. Either way with both I assume all is legit. With the amount printed vs amount taken back and destroyed in any shape mint or used its a winner in my books. |
