I have several Censor covers in my collection, but this one bugs me the most. You can barely see it, but there is a 1 shilling blue hidden underneath the lovely Examiner 5675 label. My question is how do you identify stamps like these? My Scott catalog details a Watermark SE in Monogram from the 1922 to 1923 period is worth about $17. However a Watermark "e" from 1940 to 1942 is worth much more at $42.50. The 3p overprint is clearly the 1941 version issue on April 12, 1941. This leads me to believe that the 1 shilling version is the 1940 version, but can't quite be sure. Is there any safe way to identify stamps covered by these Censor labels? I think that the cover has much more value than soaking off the individual stamps, but it would be nice to know for sure.

Also, am I correct with the actual postmark date as May 7, 1941? Thanks in advance.

The MacDonnell Whyte specialized Irish catalog says the 1/- was issued in January 1940; apparently the actual date of issue is unknown, not only for the 1/- but for several others in the set.

There is apparently no way to identify the 1922 and 1940 1/- values except by watermark.

Be careful what you wish for -- the M-W Catalog lists the 1922 at £60 and the 1940 at £20 (in 1979), used. I know that's the exact opposite of what your Scott says, and I can't explain the difference.

I think that you are correct in stating that your date is May 7, 1941.

Another good reference for Irish stamps is the "Hibernian Catalogue". It lists varieties that Scott will never recognize.

Thanks to both. It seems odd that Scott prices seem out-of-whack with other sources. I actually have 4 covers with this same issue.
