Are we talking about the same market (the $22.50 from Scott's ) as opposed to the market in which buyers and sellers compete, or is that a different market?

I read it. I think it says;
"Dear Hattie
I sent Haley 5 cts in postage to send my Ladies Home Journal as they wouldn't send one from the co. I got my address changed too late. (Can) you take it down to her and mail it to me.
Lovingly, Snow."

I found a copy of a 1912 LHJ on the internet and it cost 15 cents.

Art, they are different markets. 1 is real world and the other is suggested retail pricing.

It is for sale on ebay right now - the asking BIN price [275$] is about a hundred times reality, not fifty,

I've tried to enlarge the images of your stamp but the resolution is too low to be of any value. Can you post a scan of the stamp made at 600 or 1200 dpi?

nefbufd...Scott #498. Off center to the right, perfs cutting into the design on right, damage to the perfs lower left corner, blunted and missing perfs on the top right, missing perf on the top left corner, used with a fairly light cancel. Very common Washington-Franklin issued in 1917. Low value stamp even in much better condition. The condition on this one makes it pretty much worth nothing more than as a "space filler".

I find it interesting it's from a town in (probably rural, judging by the cancel) west Virginia. Where would you have gotten them out there???

Many companies would send a pre-stamped reply card inside of their advertising packages. If the recipient wasn't going to place an order, they would soak the stamp off and reuse it.

A penny saved is a penny earned. In this case two pennies.

Welcome
This link will show which Scott catalog numbers they could be...they are also flat plate printing so that narrows it down to two catalog numbers. You can then use those catalog numbers to search ebay for 'sold' listing to better understand the market value.
