Hello! I started to collect stamps less than a year ago and could use some help. Here's my dilemma. Penciled on the reverse of one stamp is 165. National and Continental used hard paper. Do these show characteristics of soft paper? Why I ask, is the perforation on both stamps show signs of fibers, which is usually associated with soft paper. If so would that make it an American Bank Note 1879 #190? In addition, the stamps seem to be greenish black in shade. If so, does that associate the two with the 1880 Special Print of 1879? I look and find only that shade with the 1880.Thank you for your time :)

The Scott #190 exists in the greenish black shade...

Neither stamp looks like hard paper but that is nearly a WAG considering the poor images. Please take the time to post separate images of better quality.

Soft porous paper (190) has a regular pattern of mottling that you can see when held up to a strong light. It will probably be hard to tell by color, especially in a scan as the color difference is subtle. I find that identifying soft porous paper is not too hard with practice. Maybe find some stamps that you know must have soft porous paper and use that to compare.
