This January 28, 1914 issue of Serbia depicts King Peter I (Karageorgevich) of Serbis in military uniform. It is Michel #127. From Wikipedia, Peter I (1844-1921) reigned as the last king of Serbia (1903-18) and as the first king of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (1918-21). Since he was the king of Serbia during a period of great Serbian military success, he was remembered by the Serbian people as King Peter the Liberator, and also as "Old King". By the way, if you collect by Scott, you might be confused by this stamp. They have listed it as "slate" for quite some time, and unless they have corrected this recently, fail to see it as greenish black. |

One of the most recognizable mustachioed gents in is Einstein, although his moustache is overshadowed by his famous hair. Here is the 1966 8 cent US (Scott 1285) which drew on a famous 1947 photo by Philippe Halsman. |

The closest thing I have to a personal hero is the legendary Belgian-born jazz guitarist, Jean Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt (born 1910). He is my hero for several reasons, apart from my love of his music. He overcame two huge handicaps in his life, one physical and one cultural, to become one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time, one whose influence has spawned an entire genre of jazz: so-called "gypsy" or manouche jazz. The physical handicap was one caused by a fire which almost cost him his life at age 18 and severely limited the use of his left, or fretting hand. The cultural handicap was that of the prejudice suffered by the Roma, who hate the term Gypsy, which they consider derogatory and who are some of the most despised and marginalized people in the world today, especially in Europe where most of them settled over several hundred years. Here is a stamp celebrating Django, issued by his native country. It clearly shows his trademark pencil mustache. He has also been depicted on a stamp issued by France where he lived most of his life, dying there, in Fontainebleau in 1953 |
