a mint Scott #1 today! argh! I walked into his shop and the first thing he said to me is "I have something to show you!" and he pulls it out from the back of the store. It's so frustrating because I will never be able to afford a mint copy of that...catalogue value is $10000-$60000. I didn't get to see the back so I don't know if it has original gum or not but it was well centred and had beautiful margins so it was definitely on the high end of the price range. He just got it so he didn't set a price for it as yet.

A USA 1 or Canada 1 ? My 2007 Unitrade has VF #1 at 35,000 plus 100% extra for original gum. IF VF OG I'd be sendin her to major auction house but (big sigh) I'll likely never know that option.

Stamp prices are really variable...if I paid for the same stamp from a dealer rather than a private sale from a collector I am pretty sure it would cost me more...i just paid 11,300 more for a Nissan 4x4 than I paid for our Cape Cod in 1967 !!

Philb you are 100% correct. As with many things its being in the right spot at the right time and being able to pull the trigger. Just last year I sat across a table from the most amazing collection with a 12k price tag - I knew I could 5x's my money or more with it but just couldn't pull the trigger. Hind sight is so clear.

Ah, remember how Bart Simpson lusted after Radioactive Man comic No 1, and all the trouble it caused between him and his friends when they clubbed together to buy it!

Best give it up and collect Yugoslavia - SG1 freely available for under £1.

Yes it's a Canada #1 and the price I quoted is in Canadian dollars (monopoly money for my American friends) from the 2012 Unitrade so it means the value of this stamp has practically doubled in the last five years.

...or Azerbaijan, #1 is about 30c

Canada #1 is on my bucket list, but I will take a good used copy. Actually I will settle for #4. I do not think the two deserve separate major catalog numbers anyway.

I agree that #1 and #4 do not deserve separate catalogue numbers and in my personal opinion, I don't think that coil stamps deserve separate catalogue numbers either. I treat them as varieties.

However, having said that, I would still like to have a #1. It doesn't have to be mint though because those prices are just prohibitive.

CP, I agree too about coils. Perforation varieties (which are more visible than paper) always got minor numbers. These days, paper varieties do not even get listed at all in Scott (only in Unitrade), and yet way back then they got major numbers!
