Interestingly enough, when Ukraine issued her first definitive stamps after independence from the soviet Union in 1992, the 30sh value was used as the basis of the design. It is a very simple but lovely set .

Maybe if I say it enough times, I might believe it! :-)

Is there a good guide to stamps of this era, along with known common varieties?

Apastuszak, I cannot find much more on the internet about the Ukraine Shahiv stamps, googling them brings up this post as #1.

All I know about them I learned from the ebay pages above.

When you do the album pages, have fun with the trident overprints .

Who is that chick supposed to be anyway? The image reminds me of Yulia Tymoshenko, but she is a little young for a 1918 stamp

BeeSee: Ukraine's (Scott #3) 30 shahiv image is not that of a real person. The stamp is titled Allegorical Ukraine. Allegory, sometimes regarded as an extended metaphor, in literature is a representation of abstract or spiritual meaning in concrete form. It evokes an interest on the one hand in events and characters, and on the other in the corresponding ideas and meanings.

Well, this thing called Hurricane Sandy came through and knocked my power out for almost a week.

After 3 days of no power and a 9 and 11 year old at home, I was cursing at my power company in English and Ukrainian! Then again, I can't really complain. Some people still don't have power. Me, I'm halfway through my 2007 supplement and back on SCF.

Apastuszak: Will you be adding the 1992 Ukraine provisionals to your album?

In March 1992; Ukraine began to issue regular postage stamps. While the Central Postal Authority tried to establish a postal system for the new emerging country, it also had to deal with existing economic and political difficulties. One of the major problems everyone faced in Ukraine was inflation.

To complement the issuance of regular stamps, the Central Postal Authority allowed various regional post office entities to issue provisional stamps. Provisional stamps issued in Ukraine from 1992 to 1995 can be classified into the following categories:

Local Provisionals:
Original stylized stamps that were printed by either hand or mechanical means.

Overprints:
New values overprinted by either hand or mechanical means on former USSR stamps.

Surcharges:
New values and text overprinted by either hand or mechanical means on former Soviet envelops and postcards. Due to the turbulent times, not all of the above mentioned issues, can be considered official. There were lot of non-official items used in normal circulation.

With the availability of large amounts of former-Soviet low denominational definitives, many forgeries began to appear. Many forgeries have appeared on covers after the post offices had sold out their initial issue. Many unauthorized reprints were also made from the original cliches. These reprints were done with the wrong colours, ink and denominational values. Also, many fakes were sold by postal workers at the Post Office to the public.

I have a set of the provisionals you have pictured. Problem is, that's the set issued by the Kiev post office. There were provisionals issued by various other post offices throughout Ukraine. I think you can fill a whole album just with provisionals. I think I will tackle them once 2007-2012 are done, if I can a good reference to all the provisionals.

I have read that the Western Ukrainian overprints of 1918 are some of the most counterfeited stamps in history. They are so many counterfeited stamps, it's almost impossible to expertise them, since a large number of expertisers were using counterfeits they thought were genuine to do their appraisals.

Apastuszak: Now you can see how useful those blank pages, I asked for, are; perfect for making your own provisional pages.

I just took a really good look at the Provisional section of ukrainian-philately.info. Though I have been to the site a lot over the last year and a half, I have never gone into the Provisional Section. It has pretty much everything I need. I'm going to talk to the web site owner and get permission to use his text on my pages. it should be pretty easy to crank out some 1991-92 provisional stamp pages once I have time to work on them.
