The 1937 Art Deco edifice is the only building in Canada to bear the insignia of King Edward VIII's short-lived reign, and features striking bas-relief depictions of the period's then-modern modes of transportation.

It also has historical significance as the former site of Montgomery's Tavern, where William Lyon Mackenzie mustered his rebel force during the Rebellion of 1837, which helped pave the way toward "responsible government" in Canada.

Interesting thread.

I too frown whenever I hear of a historic building being destoyed. Every time it happens, we lose a part of our heritage.

About 15 years ago (+ or - a couple), there was a special booklet produced by Canada Post on the history of Toronto's Post Offices.

Let's hope that the PO site will be saved.

Did the tavern building in the Toronto Star picture become the post office or was it torn down to build an art deco post office building. The tavern itself looks pretty avant garde for the time.

Reading the comments below the article ,seems to have it that the tavern was burnt down in 1837 , and the picture was prior to the post office. Historical site but maybe not so historical building . Still sad to see a nearly centurian post office be sold off in lieu of a shoppers kiosk.
