I came across these two today. I thought they were kind of cool. I wonder if they were issued at same time or one replaced the other.

Same time. For a while South Africa was issuing stamps in pairs in both official languages, English and Afrikaans.

They are generally collected as joined pairs, though the catalogues do price them individually, as well.

I studied/was forced to study Afrikaans in school - it was by far my worst subject. I can speak some and understand some more .

Thankfully nobody had to learn or study all of the languages on this South African stamp... over 70 translations for "the Bible" are there.

South Africa has 11 official languages - You can see the languages on the fauna and flora definitives. I was taught English, Afrikaans and Zulu.

Scotzm the stamp you show above comes from one of my favourite sets - because it includes the withdrawn 40c stamp of which only 1500 copies are said to have made it to the post office.

How is this for camouflage ?

If you were a predator, you would swear this fish was facing left, with a big black eye.
Look again.
