Alonso Jofre Tenorio (1292-1340) was a Spanish admiral killed in action while commanding the vastly outnumbered Castilian fleet against a Moroccan fleet in a sea battle in the Strait of Gibraltar. Cesáreo Fernández Duro (1830-1908) was a Spanish naval captain, writer, scholar and historian. Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Fernández Duro, printed by photogravure, ad issued for use in Ifni on July 10, 1962 to benefit children's welfare funds, Scott No. 104, plus an image of the original oil painting of Captain Cesáreo Fernández Duro, at the Naval Museum of Madrid, which was the model for this stamp's design. Theophil Sprecher von Bernegg (1850-1927) was a Swiss politician who served as the military Chief of the General Staff from 1905 to 1919. Here is an image of a semi-postal (charity) stamp featuring a portrait of Sprecher, designed and engraved by Karl Bickel (1886-1982), and issued by Switzerland on December 1, 1950 to benefit children's welfare funds, Scott No. B196, plus an image of a photograph of Theophil Sprecher von Bernegg which was the model for this stamp's design. - nethryk   |

William Brown (aka in Spanish as Guillermo Brown, 1777-1857) was an Irish-born Argentine admiral whose major naval victories made him a national hero of Argentina, where he is called the "father of the Argentine Navy." Here is an image of a stamp featuring a portrait of Brown, engraved by Maria Adelma Cabrera, and issued by Argentina on November 2, 1985, Scott No. 1459, plus an image of a miniature portrait of Admiral Guillermo Brown by London artist Henry Hervè (fl. 1801-c.1817) which was surely the model for this stamp's design. - nethryk   |
