Hi everyone!

I´m interested if there are some stamps with medieval bestiaries (weird animals images and people as well).
(Google images examples of bestiaries here https://www.google.com/search?q=bes...E1034IE1035)

This year Ireland issued these stamps with the Book of Kells images.

Also they have this one from some years ago

And I also found this one:

and this one

Have you seen any other?
Thanks!

How does the last image fit the theme?
Would you include dragons and unicorns in that theme?
For Ireland, look at the 'Gerl' definitives.

Thank you! Well, I admit the last one isn´t 100% the same, but there are not many stamps for this topic and I thought the mouse could do.

No doubt someone will pick up on it and post more stamps on this theme. Not long ago PostEurope had 'legends and myths' for its annual theme. I would expect a few member states will have used a medieval legend or myth that involved an animal.

The mouse, I think, is a terrible drawing and it is not mediaeval, being related to Robert Burns.

You might research mediaeval church architecture on stamps. Romanesque capitals and mediaeval misericords will fall into the category. There must be stamps depicting those.

We had a thread about the 'Monkey King.'

Aztec monuments?

There is this 2009 Mythical Creatures set from the UK. It features unicorns, dragons, pixies, giants, mermaids and fairies.

This write-up about a U.S.A. set of dragons from 2018 might be of interest:

Not easy to find...but maybe the following stamps would fit

Tapestry, gallery of Apocalypse, 14th century, Angers castle, Maine et Loire department, Pays de la Loire, France, engraved by Jean Pheulpin and issued by France on October 30, 1965:

Lady and the Unicorn, Tapestry, 15th century, Musée de Cluny in Paris, engraved by Pierre Gandon and issued by France on October 31, 1964:

St. George slaying the dragon, by Vittore Carpaccio (c.#8201;1465 – 1525/1526), issued by Italy on July 30, 1976:

Will look at my Mythologies of the World collection. Maybe I will find more one or two...

If anyone ever gets the opportunity to visit the Musée de Cluny in Paris on their travels then a viewing of the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries is a must. They are all breathtakingly beautiful.

Thanks for posting LaoPhil.

Beside the stamps I posted above, I have a long set of 15 stamps from Montserrat 1996 about "Mythical creatures". Among the creatures, several that I think, but not sure, are medieval like Goblin, Leprechaun, Griffin, Gnome, Elf etc. Please, tell me if there are stamps in this set depicting medieval creatures and I will be glad to post them.

Beautifully medieval creatures, LaoPhil.

And I share the question he raised - mythical creatures may have older roots than Medieval, I would imagine, as your first examples from 2023.

londonaddict - I enjoyed the link of images you posted, which have similar manner/style in painting. If "story" around those personified animals are the key feature? Or all kinds of mythical animals which are interacting with human you are interested in?

Here is one I think it might fit, medieval rooted heraldry of hairy knight.

Czechoslovakia
21 October 1968 / Arms of Czech Regional Capitals: Ústí nad Labem / design & engrave: J. Her#269;ik
