This is perhaps a stupid question but I have never had a stamp certified. I know the procedures for getting a certificate and have a good idea of the cost but I am wondering how you select someone to provide the certificate. I've googled W.R. Weiss Jr. and acknowledge he likely knows a lot but still have no idea whether or not his attestation is worth any more than the postage required to deliver his certificate. No doubt he is a well-known and respected expert but his name really means nothing to me. In Canada, if I were looking for a certificate, I would probably go to a very well-known and respected organization, e.g. the Vincent Green Foundation, but I also acknowledge that they are probably not well-known either. So, how do you decide?

Probably, for Canada, not so much. But He is pretty well known- and his certificates are respected- for U.S. stamps. He hangs out a lot at "another" Stamp Forum.

And his certs are very reasonable, I think its $25 per cert if I recall.
He will also look over a ebay scan or your own scan and do a id for $5.
I have used him a few times but never for Canada just US

Floortrader your very much right . Great bunch of guys and gals here that are quick to ID a stamp.
I have used his $5 id a few times on ebay auctions, and if you send the stamp to him for a cert the $5 is takin as a credit towards the cost.
Sometimes when I sell on ebay and not 100% sure I will have him do a id with a scan, I know that this is not near as good as sending it to him but gives me a little peace of mind when I list a high value stamp for auction.
After all 99% of buyers will be sending the stamp to him for a cert
