A 99c find on ebay.

Hungary stamp on a postcard depicting an absolutely pathetic looking Napoleon I, cancelled Vukovar 17 Oct 1911, to Osijek, both now in Croatia.

can anyone translate the violet handstamp and the message? Wadmalatz ?

Hi,

The handstamp appears to start "Osijek Zensur", i.e. "Osijek Censor" in German.

I would suggest the postmark date is 1917 rather than 1911.

I believe this 10 filler stamp was first issued in 1916.

Thanks Nigel. Yes, if it is censored, the date is obviously 1917.

The painting of Napoleon I on the postcard is from Paul Delaroche (1797-1856).
"Napoleon abdicate in Fontainebleau" painted in 1840.

Thanks Timbres. Napoleon looks like he is slouching, and having a bad hair day, LOL.

Forgot to mention the abdication was in 1814. To see the original painting you have to go to the "Musée de l'Armée" in Paris.

I can't find out the name, but the surname is "Babogredac". Under it is a note "ucenici", which means "a (female) student"... so, **** Babogredac was a student in that time, preparing to be a young teacher.

"Preparandija" is a kind of high school, preparing for the young teachers... it's name came from the latin "Praepharandus", which means to PREPARE for something... so, you can see that both English word "Prepare", Slavic "Preparand", German "Präparand"... came from the latin "Praepharandus".
