Question about GB postmark penny red cover?

Came across this cover, the postmark seems suspect to me, the letter was posted from Liverpool to St George New Brunswick Canada.
The 466 I believe is a Liverpool cancel but it seems the stamp was added to the cover. The postmark on the stamp is not tied to the cover.

But on the back there is a nice St George N.B cancel which looks right.

The letter is a lumber report from Farnsworth and Jardine Liverpool and is a really great read about the lumber trade and prices from 1859.
A nice piece of history. I have put a scan of the front here but I have also left a link to flicker, where you can see high res images, just click in image and then right click over the image and you can open in large format.

Irishjack, you are right that "466" is the number for Liverpool. I am curious about the 1d stamp being sufficient to mail a letter to Canada during this timeframe. I have seen other letters to Canada during this era and I think that they had 7 or 8d on them.

1d I asked this question myself. Maybe as the letter was a circular it might have has newspaper media rate?

I'm wondering if the 1d paid the rate to deliver the letter to the Europa. The Europa may have been a contract ship or owned by the timber company. They wouldn't need to pay any additional postage on a private ship.

The oval cancel made up of thick bars is typical of the cancels used on circulars after they were added to the Book Post (1848 to 1870). The rate was one penny for each 4ozs. The mark seems right, but the absence of significant areas of the cancellation mark on the cover, even residue or part strikes, indicates something not quite right here. I love the minimal addressing needed back then to find the recipient. And the handwriting.

The two 6's are quite different and very crude, unusual for a steel cancel. I agree, something not quite right here.

A few thoughts on this.
Could the stamp be pre cancelled by the company/post office, If they cancelled all the stamps first when on a sheets then put on the circular.
They may have owned the ship Europa.
They would have had quite a few of these reports to send to Canada and maybe have one of the deck hands sailors do this once out on sea.

The company might buy a few dozen sheets or more at the post office , and the post office may have just cancelled each stamp. then the company Farnsworth and Jardine would have affixed the stamps on the cover???

Back in the day they would have been under pressure to get the newsletter out to the customers and once out to sea the sailors would have downtime and this might have been common practise back then?.

Does this sound possible

That's possible for sure.
Your biggest hurdle is to establish authenticity of the postmark.
If that is a bodgie, then the value goes out the window.

We need a GB specialist with knowledge of Liverpool postmarks.
I do not recall a six bar 466
Agree with Doug the two 6's are crude
as is the double line on the RHS which has become a blob.

Here's the real McCoy........

Notice it is an 8 bar

Completely wrong. The style is like nothing I've ever seen before, and let's not forget it's a duplex, so where's the other half of the postmark? Perhaps it was unfranked and some creativity has taken place....

If it IS a counterfeit cancel, then (to a specialist) it may be worth substantially more than the real thing. Plus, someone would have to go to a lot of trouble to create a minimally-passable counterfeit.

Too early for GB QV precancels which began mid 1860's.
Both of irishjack's "466" look not tied to cover.

Hi Irishjack,

I'm still trying to get to grips with a mental image of your Herculean fisted deckie tearing stamps off a sheet and sticking them on letters. Beats reefing the fore tops'l though.
