"Maybe" not a precancel. This stamp was, a very valuable Canadian precancel, which I threw in a lot for essentially nothing.

Doug yours was (is) a Style T precancel used from 1888 to 1903. On the #51 catalogued in Unitrade (2011) for $15 fine, $25 very fine. Hard to tell from the pic but my guess is your 51 is (was) fine centering.

True enough, but I found all that out too late; somebody informed me the precancel was worth 5x the plain stamp.

Best bet:
Not a precancel
Affixed to a cheque (revenue usage) and cancelled by financial institution.
