I'm still a rookie here on the forum. I have seen people post that they were "bumping this topic" While I get the general idea what exactly is bumping? How is it done? and Why not just start another post of the same subject?

It's a way to bring a post back up to the top of the list so it doesn't get lost in the crowd. Some have suggested it stands for Bring Up My Post. |

You just did. Just submit another posting and your thread is automatically moved back to the top of the list. You are a quick study! |

Wow, it's that simple. I have this habit of making things more complicated than they need to be. Thanks for your reply. |

Quote: It's a way to bring a post back up to the top of the list so it doesn't get lost in the crowd. Some have suggested it stands for Bring Up My Post. james post may have been a trifle confusing. He wrote the word 'post' twice when he should have written 'Thread' ! He corrected it here: Quote: You just did. Just submit another posting and your thread is automatically moved back to the top of the list.

PJS: It doesn't make that much difference when you read SCF forum-by-forum. However, if you use the ACTIVE and/or LAST 100 ACTIVE buttons on the toolbar, the effects of bumping become more obvious. KirkS |

Kirk's got the squigglies. Somebody must of bumped him while he was drawing... But seriously, nice graphic, Kirk. A picture is worth a thousand words. k |

Were you using the pen-cancel on your avatar as a template?
BTW, if there was a contest for the most interesting stamp avatar, yours would get my vote! |

Yeah, I remember that thread. You started it about 1 month before I joined SCF, but it was still active when I joined so I saw it and posted in it.
What do you call it when a thread gets hijacked? Thumped? Jumped? |

I call that "old men who can't stay on topic..." You know the old warning, "Don't let your mind wander. It's too small to be out by itself." Seriously, I think 'hijacking' is the proper term -- just as you used it. Kirk |

I suppose that we owe it to the newer frequenters of online fora to point out that each board has its own culture regarding bumping.
Some boards think that 'bump' is a four-letter word. Not to worry here, though (and why go anywhere else, anyway?). |

thanks for posting this question - I thought that's what it was - but in college when we went out for a "bump" there was alcohol involved. |
