I have just received the most amazing envelope from Partime [see Feedback thread] and it is something very special, something I had never seen before. Contained therein were 4 superb labels [just about perfect] Mint Never Hinged with unblemished gum, from the International Stamp Exhibition held at Grosvenor House,London, 6-13 May, 1950. But these were no ordinary labels. The labels were produced in the USA by a Stamp Dealer, John.W Nicklin by Typography in sheetlets of 15. They exist Perforated and Imperf and it was the latter which arrived today. Having never seen them before I was quite taken aback by the superb quality and excellent condition of the labels. There is no doubt in my mind that, although the labels were produced for a UK event, they have never left the USA in 62 years ! The perforated types are on ordinary paper but these Imperfs are on a much thicker paper, almost a thin card and are heavily glazed giving a super overall appearance. If I didn't know better, I'd say they had just been printed...truly a wonderful set to behold. Here they are...and they are mine. Many thanks again to Partime for thinking of me when he found these. There are some truly great folk here. Official colours [from top]: Yellow and Chocolate Yellow and Emerald Yellow and Deep Blue Yellow and Violet Londonbus1.....

Nicklin also produced U.S. albums in the 1930s and 1940s, published by Grosset & Dunlap, a major book printing firm. Nicklin was one of the first to put spaces for stamps on the right-hand side of facing pages, while the left-hand side had Scott Catalog #, color, denomination, and catalog value! I have one of his albums that ends in 1935. |

I heartily agree with quigngt. I picked up these items at a local stamp club auction. I still don't know who was actually selling these items, but there was a fair amount of other Cinderellas at good prices. Not knowing anything about them, I didn't bid on anything else. However, as soon as I saw these, I knew that Londonbus1 would make a good home for them. They would have just sat in a book on my shelf, but I'm sure that Londonbus1 will enjoy as much as anyone. I'll keep looking, but everyone should keep posting items of interest for the rest of us to find.
(If anyone ever finds reasonable quality high value Columbians at a fair price, please email me ...)
Hats off to Londonbus1, and now onto the next stamp auction ... |

Londonbus, just finished reading the posts on these and never knew Nicklin produced these. They are very nicely produced. I have almost a complete collection of the Nicklin ASDA and US show label sheets that he designed. I just came across a large original artwork collection by him showing how he designed many of these stamps. I will start up another post not to hijack this one but would very much appreciate any and all information on Nicklin. I am planning a exhibit on him the next show in the late Fall. |

Londonbus, I have been working on a exhibit for Nicklin designs and have come across the actual printers mockup for these. They are in transit so when they come in I will post and send you the scans and information on them. |

Thanks Mac, I'd be very interested to see them. I still have a look at these labels most days. I think I'm in love Back to earth, the label shown by wt1 is similar to one I have that looks like part of a series. Do you know anything about them ? Londonbus1 |

I am slowly getting many items like these for my exhibit. Acquired a large lot like these but with Nicklins ASDA Show Labels.Basically showing original artwork and mockups for printing. Sorry about the blur but my eyes taking pictures swore they were clear. LOL Will try and get some scans next week for you. |
