Happy Birthday to Lt. General José Antonio de la Caridad Maceo y Grajales (1845-1896), called by fellow Cubans the "Bronze Titan" on account of his skin color, stature and status, an outstanding guerrilla leader and second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence who led the forces which invaded Western Cuba. Here in a image of a stamp depicting General Maceo leading a charge on horseback, engraved and printed by Waterlow & Sons, Ltd., and issued by Cuba on December 15, 1948 to commemorate the centenary of the general's birth, Scott No. 427, plus a photograph of Antonio Maceo. - nethryk |

The Derby Stakes, aka the Epsom Derby, is an annual flat horse race in England open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies which is run in early June at Epsom Downs in Surrey over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 meters). Here is an image of an airmail stamp depicting a steeplechase race, designed and engraved by Michel Monvoisin, and issued by Mali on March 8, 1971 to publicize the Epsom Derby, Scott No. C117. Note: Flat racing is a form of horse racing which is run over a level track, whereas steeplechase racing is run over hurdles. Your guess is as good as mine as to why a steeplechase design was chosen to illustrate this world famous flat horse race. - nethryk |
