Was going through this new collection and came across these. The previous owner has sc numbers in pencil on back stating they are between 62-65 but I see that 75-78 are really close to same including perfs. I do see colors seem a bit different but I'm lost when it comes to ermany as a whole. Scan is high dpi due to mention of white red paint on frame lines - again I probably wouldn't see it if it was there anyway. I do see the differences in top 2 designs but that is having a comparison but still not sure which is which. As always help appreciated.

Germany can be complicated... Design changes, watermark changes, and perforation hole changes.... From my http://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.co...71-1921.html blog- scroll down about half way for the relevant discussions and images.. Here is a snippet... Quote: The 1920 issues...
In 1920, Germany produced stamps similar but not identical to the prior issues.....
1906 1m carmine red & 1920 1m red Note the differences! For fun, we will compare the 1906 "pre-war" issue with the 1920 version. One should note the vignette design for the 1M stayed essentially the same through 1919. I see differences in the horse and buggy and pedestrians, the sky, the frame design, the numerals, and the fact that the 1920 stamps were produced offset rather than engraved as those before. But be aware that the 1920 stamp is not infrequently mistaken for others, and can be found wandering in various spaces in albums. ;-) |

These can be a difficult area with Scott because their listings for these are horrible and leave out some major varieties.
First, they're not Scott 62-65. Scott 62-65 say "REICHSPOST", whereas these say "DEUTSCHES REICH".
As to whether they're from the Scott 75-78 or Scott 92-95 sets, you have to look at a few other things.
Count the perf holes. They're either 25:17 or 26:17. Also, check the watermarks. There will either be none, or a diamond shape.
Scott 75-78 have no watermark, and are 26:17.
Scott 92-95 have the diamond watermark, and are 25:17.
There are also diamond watermarks with 26:17, unwatermarked 25:17 varieties, and peace/war printings that differ greatly in value, but Scott doesn't list them, at least in the version of Scott I have.
If you could list the watermarks you have here, I can try to give you a definite read on what you have. |

The biggest giveaway on the red ones seem to be the "1 Mark" - Numbers are different

Top 2 and 5M are all diamond WTMK . I get 26 perfs on top 2 but 25 on 5M and 3M I knew scott's wasn't being very useful since they really don't mention squat about differences. I'm looking at an older 2007 computer version so any updated info would be greatly appreciated. |

Top left -- Either Michel 94 A I a (yellowish-red under UV) or 94 A I b (carmine under UV). Michel 94 A I. Scott 92b in the Specialized Catalogue. Top right -- Either Michel A 113 a (red under UV) or A 113 b (brownish-lilac under UV). Scott 111. Bottom left -- Michel 80 B a. Scott77b in the Specialized Catalogue. Bottom right -- Michel 97 B II. Scott 95. Correction made because I was looking at the wrong line in the catalogue while typing. |

Thanks Postmaster- I guess Scott vs Michael is an absolute when dealing with Germany. I can see how the previous owner mis ID these. I'll safely assume even the ones I can't see due to specialized are of minimal cat value and of course condition is not there anyway. This was one of the first countries I pulled from the big lot I purchased so I will have to be wary of his cataloging as I go forward. |
