According to Stanley Gibbons:

"Graphite lines
Vertical black lines printed on the back of certain British stamps in 1957. The substance used was called Naphthadag (Deflocculated Acheson's Graphite) and was employed in connection with early experiments at Southampton with the automatic sorting of mail. Stamps intended for use on fully paid mail, such as sealed letters (and later the second class rate), had only one line. This permitted the segregation of mail into the basic categories for sorting and stamping. These lines were superseded by phosphor bands."

My questions...since these were only used in 1957, how rare are they? While sorting through all my GB stamps, I've only seen one so far (out of about 500). Anyone else have any of these?

Graphite-lined stamps were in use until late 1961 when Phosphor only stamps took their place.
3 different sets were issued.
The 1957 set you mention has the least value of the 3 and can be purchased for a few pounds/dollars.
The 1958 and 1959 issues are far less common and are usually found in the £40-£60 range [$60-$90].

The above prices are for MNH.
Used can be purchased for about 50% less for the '57 set; and around half [or a bit more than] for the other two sets.

Line varieties also exist.

I'll have to keep a watch out while going through the rest. Seems like something to have since they were only used for a couple years.

Thanks for the info.

I bought Canadian 1 cent( queen Elisabet 1957.. - wilding issue) with red line on background of stamp. Red line is wide 2 mm and covered with parts of glue. Is that a graphite line also?

The glue is over the line. That is ease to spot on picture. Is it impossimble because of transfer from air male?
Thanks Rod

Sorry Stampsfield,
that is beyond my knowledge.
You need to consult Unitrade to see if graphite lines existed on your issue.
