POCON: 057193
HALIFAX Central
Nova Scotia,
Canada

2010-10-04 [FDC Oct. 4, 2010]

The $10 blue whale stamp, Scott™ #2405, (detail below, from a postally registered, used first-day cover) is currently Canada's biggest definitive, in value and size, of any stamp ever issued by Canada Post.

Previously, Canada's $8 grizzly bear issue [1997] held that distinction. The $10 blue whale stamp is double the length of the grizzly bear stamp.

The blue whale stamp was produced using intaglio and silkscreen for the whale and offset lithography for the colours in the background. At the time (2010) the intaglio process was recently reinvented using a new, state-of-the-art laser engraving technology. Master engraver, Jorge Peral, is credited for having engraved the image of the whale for Canada Post. Well done.

Excellent photograph of a wonderful stamp.

I like that fluorescent-ink scuba diver on the stamp that shows the relative size between a man and a bllue whale.

That Post Office is on Bedford Row downtown.

I think that the rest of the cancel is inked suffiecently and the forward slash is what it appears to be. It is shifted downwards and to the right a bit also.

I am not sure how that could happen. I have only had a chance to examine a cancelling device while it was held by a postal employee and no detailed, under the magnifying glass chance, yet. There may be other characters available other than the numbers alone.

I think I have seen one that has a dash instead of a zero also.

A zoom on the date in question:

I agree with Puzzler. The spacing between the other numbers is much smaller than the spacing between the 2 and the /.

I just noticed after posting the picture above that the whole day plug is shifted downwards.

I have a question related to scarcity of a given postmark ..... and how to get some index/reference materials relating to CA postmarks.

Some individuals selling postmarks have utilized the R1-R10 Unitrade style ratity ratings while others use the A-E ratings (similar to the US perfin ratings) for the postmark evaluation. I've also seen Rick Kunz's RPO pricing history, so is there a preferred rating standard for postmarks ?

I am seeking a guide for the 20th century cancels - Broken Circles, Machine roller, Barrell Rollers, Möllendorff, spray-ons, Pocons ...... The Canadian post office site is a starting place but it seems incomplete for the DPOs. Would anyone recommend a good book or a group who collects the postmarks of CA ? I didn't find a good match in the APS or BNAPS groups, but I might be missing something. Thanks for any additional information.
