Hello drewf, welcome! Quote: I am seeking a guide fr the 20th century cancels I myself do not have one. I started this thread because I could not find a reference online for POCON postmarks, so thought I would make one. I hope to do a short one on spray-on cancels and pictorial cancels as well, just to have a history or reference for what does exist,. The rarity will come from popularity of collecting the different cancels and collector interest in the varieties of same I feel. Rarity is mostly a relative factor I would think. Whatever the market will bear is what stamps are based on, what dealers can and do sell them for and report to catalogue publishers, or are recorded by interested parties. Postmarks are based upon population in a town or post office area and also on the companies and businesses that exist within that area of usage, and, of course, collector interest. There are stamps and cancels that are more interesting to some collectors or certain areas and then less interesting to other collectors. There is the Postal History Society of Canada (PHSC) http://www.postalhistorycanada.net/...es/intro.phpbut again, I do not belong there (yet) or have and info regarding rarity factors. |

Puzzler BNAPS has published a book dealing with the Inkjet cancels : Canada Inkjet (Jet Spray) Cancels 1992-2005 (3rd Edition), 2006 by Joel Weiner. This 3rd edition of the Canadian Inkjet catalogue lists over 2300 distinct varieties along with thousands of minor variations, an increase of about 900 cancels since the 2001 edition. It provides the collector with the most complete listing of these cancels available. Spiral Bound, 220 pp. Quote: I could not find a reference online for POCON postmarks I'm surprised that you haven't joined the Postal History of Canada. It's only $15. The information you seek is waiting for you. Pictorial CancelsThis is an area that should be explored. The cancels have not been promoted with much enthusiasm from Canada Post. Even the communities who have obtained them are silent. I look forward to seeing what will be posted. In the meantime, here is a website you might appreciate: http://stampraider.blogspot.ca/p/ca...cancels.htmlThe Canada Post page on Pictorial Cancels has been reference on this board: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/per...ls/index.jsf |

With regards to modern POCON cancellations, and all of the variations, pictorial cancels, money order office cancels, etc, there is an excellent PHSC study group that deals with this. The Money Order Office Study Establishment (MOOSE) publishes the quarterly Bull.MOOSE. The Bull.MOOSE is dedicated to research and writings on Canadaian MOO, MOOD, MOTO, MOON, POCON, RC and CCN cancellation types and post office numbering systems. |

Excellent references and links, thank you all.
However, I have not joined the PHSC yet as of this time, my finances being of some concern.
I had thought that others in similar circumstances might benefit from a free online list and display of the cancels and stamps and related information such as had been provided regarding the 2010 Canada Marine Life stamps.
And besides, it is fun, all this hunting around and finding out things for myself. All part of stamp collecting for me. |

Puzzler I appreciate seeing your scans. This is a great opportunity to keep track of current cancellations. I have only become interested in spray-ons recently. I would like to see examples of today's cancellations from all the processing plants. This forum seems ideal to do this. Here is an example of what came in the mail yesterday : Does anyone have recent jetsprays from Winnipeg? I have ignored jetsprays since they were introduced in 1992 but forced myself to learn about them for the following posting: http://postalhistorycorner.blogspot...stmarks.html |

Quote: This forum seems ideal to do this. This particular thread is hopefully only for POCON cancellations and related material. I did hope to start another thread, with a database-type list in it like here, for the spray-ons, and also for the pictorial cancels. And now, also, for some of the nice new circular cancels (larger POCON-sized ones) from recent times throughout Canada, another thread and list. I think I need some Time Management ideas! http://www.thinkrightnow.com/audios...nagement.aspWonderful blog you have going there. I need to persue and study up. Thanks for sharing. The below link is to an SCF thread that shows a couple of the newer, shorter version of spray-on cancels, but no list there. I need to start a new one up. https://goscf.com/t/32000I will link back to your post from the older thread and any new one created. edit: typos |
