Was reading an article today in the Dec 12 issue of Gibbons Stamp Monthly about Omnibus Issues and it got me to wondering about them etc etc

Quote:
An omnibus issue is an issue of stamps by several countries with a common subject and which may share a uniform design

Quote:
The first omnibus has been said to be the issue of 1898 by Portugal and her colonies to commemorate the quatercentenary of Vasco de Gama's discovery of the sea route to India.

So how many people collect them and and if so what are some of the more favourite ones?

Also does anyone know of an earlier one than that quoted above?

For me the only "Omnibus Issue" in my collection so far is one centred on the 150th Anniversary of the US Constitution. I only have a couple of items to go to complete it I think.

As you probably know, there are several omnibus issues in the British Commonwealth and not just those celebrating a coronation or wedding anniversary. The 1949 U.P.U. issues and the 1966 Churchill commemorative set are examples. My personal favourite is the 1935 King George V Silver Jublilee series although I'm not trying to collect them all, just the ones from the several Commonwealth countries in which I have a special interest.

So, my collection of stamps commemorating the 100th anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) might be considered as an omnibus.

While my collection of Franklin Delano Roosevelt issues might be more of a topical collection? Even though many nations issued stamps honoring his death in the mid to late 1940's

What you have there is known as a joint issue. Typically two countries will release stamps with similar designs. Sometimes the designs are almost exactly the same with the exception of country and currency designations. Sometimes they'll be more of an "artist's interpretation". The omnibus issues are released by more countries. Scott catalogues have a listing of omnibus issues at the front of each volume.

Some of the omnibus issues are very popular, and you can find quite a bit of information on them. Here's an excellent site for the KGV Silver Jubilee omnibus issue.

Here's a good site for joint issues, like your St. Lawrence Seaway issue.

Thanks for the site reference on the KGV Jubilees, Ryan. Shows why some collectors can specialize in these issues. It's probably becoming a tough specialization in this case as the prices of these issues have risen quite a bit and you can seldom bid on a set on ebay without getting some competition.
