I just acquired this interesting 5c Beaver cover (image cropped). The stamp is very fine - not bad for $10.50 . Now to do some research on Russells Hotel.

Thanks for that information Sylvain. I also found several references to Russell's Hotel at http://news.google.com/newspapers and some indicate it was on "Palace Street", now obviously Côte du Palais. I guess it was torn down, or could it be that older building next to the hospital? The St. Andrews Bay Pilot - Jan 29, 1862: The Quebec Daily Mercury - Mar 6, 1863 |

I did a research all evening. I share what I found. Russell bought the Albion Hotel in 1843. The address was 29 and 31 Côte du Palais (Palace Street). It was the best hotel in Quebec City in those days. In 1860 Krieghoff sold his paintings there and Prince Albert Grimaldi of Monaco slept there. I didn't find a picture (a new invention then) but here is a menu of those days. Later the hotel became the Stadacona and after the Hotel Victoria. A fire destroyed it in 1902. Hotel Victoria was rebuilt the other side of the street. This new hotel still exist under the name Manoir Victoria http://www.manoir-victoria.com/inde...r-old-quebec. A parking was built at the place of the burning hotel in 1915. It was replaced by another parking at the end of WWII. |

Oh great info Sylvain! Merci! My interest lies in that I have information that my great grandfather spent some days there at Russell's after arriving from Ireland in 1855, before coming to Montreal. |

This place was expensive for the days. Your great grandfather must have had somme money left from his trip. |

Thanks again Sylvain. My great grandfather did not have much money when he came from Ireland. He ended up working as a labourer on the Grand Trunk Railway. From reading the ads on the Russell's, it seems to have had its ups and downs. |

Thought this image from one of the St. Louis Hotel envelopes might be appropriate here: Edit: just found out this is not from my collection but something I got from a stamp community post some time ago (link below). Check out the nice cds 14-bar circular grid duplex cancel on the small queen victoria. https://goscf.com/t/3998&SearchTerm...s+hotel |

Nice one Cynical. Willis Russell seems to have owned several hotels in the Quebec City area. |

Thanks for the interesting link Rhino Dino. The piece has arrived, and here is a scan of the partial letter. It is obviously some sort of business letter. Here is a close-up of the stamp. It is actually a very nice copy, undamaged. |
