I came across this illustration of a Pony Express rider hotly pursued by what look to be Sioux or Cheyenne. Drawn by Dennis McLoughlin for the Buffalo Bill annual way back when I was a boy. The perspective, the balance of the rider and the aim of the pistol are all spot on. Just thought I would share it. McLoughlin, a Scot, had an extensive knowledge of western lore and also wrote "Wild and Woolly - an Encyclopaedia of the Old West" published by Barnes and Noble.

Very cool picture! This would not be Sioux (Dakota/Lakota) since the Pony Express did not run through their territory. It could be Cheyenne or Arapaho. The head dress would not have been worn since the type shown would be ceremonial use only!

Hi warehouse,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of printing a small version of this to set off a section on US stamps showing aspects of the Old West. Maybe use it as a title page illustration. I also like the work of Maud and Mishka Petersham in their book America's Stamps. If I can find an example I'll post it here.
