I bought a box lot on the weekend. I collect used classic worldwide and I have been upgrading the cancels in my collection for several years. A local dealer called me and said he had a box lot that I would want for $30.00. He said it was all common classic worldwide used.I figured for $30 I could not go wrong. I told him to hold it for me sight unseen. I picked it up on Saturday and just got around to looking at it.
Here is what I got;
Two red boxes of Canadian stamps, (all identified). One was mostly 19th century. A bunch of Queens, mostly under $2.00 cat., but a whole bunch.
The equivalent of probably 3 red boxes of classic worldwide used in glassines. Again they are all identified with several suprises, the best so far being a penny black with three good margins,(the forth is tight but not into the design).
Two cigar boxes with a mixture of on/off paper.
14 covers. 12 were philatelic. The last two were territorial Montana postal cards.
Four small stockbooks with Austrian and German stamps and some very nice SON cancels.
Five of those old paperback type albums with very few stamps.
And finally a large envelope of mint US blocks and partial sheets from the 70's and 80's that will be used for postage ($17.36).
I would have paid over 30 bucks for the penny black alone. It has a nice red cancel. The funny part is the crap was on top. The old paperback albums with very few stamps were on the very top. Under that was the cigar boxes of on/off paper. If I had not been called I may have browsed it quickly and moved on without digging to the good stuff. In fact the box sat on the floor by my desk until today as it did not look to exciting. It was a consignment lot. I don't think anyone paid it too much attention and the prices on consignment lots are set by the seller. My guess is they were selling part of a relatives collection.
