I have just been sorting through some commercial covers from Italy addressed to Indianapolis USA. They have all been sent from an address in Montecatini Terme and have the same handstamped postmark which unfortunately are not very clear, but appear to have the inscription "Montecatini Terme (Arr. Part.)- Pistola" The difficulty I have is in deciphering the date on the postmark which in the example is 12-9602.1 and I am translating to 1st February 1996 at 12noon. However, the 2 x 100 lire Syracusa stamps would have been obsolete in 1996, so am I reading the date wrong?

In 2002 before Italy joined the Euro club the exchange rate was
2237 Lire per USD probably not much changed from lets say 1996.

That 200 Lire would be around 9c and there is no way
Air Mail from Italy to US was that low in 1996.

Therefore I would agree with Cjd

I see: "12-9.602.1".
So, my guess would be 12/09/60, that in continental Europe, means : "September 12, 1960". As for the "2.1", I've no idea.
