In 1983 my wife was Madrid studying Spanish language and culture and I received a bonus from my employer. At the same time a friend was broke, but in possession of a MNH Block no. 1 of the German Reich, the IPOSTA Block of Sept. 1930. He wanted 1,200 Marks which were more than the bonus I had got - which was 950 Marks. That's the amount I finally paid him.
CV now I suppose is about 1,500 Euros, but right now I cannot find it in my collection.
I probably have it at my bank - will have to check.

mindpsyche - When I found it, I was actually more excited to just find one at a dealers table that I could examine in person and make a determination that it was in fact genuine. The vast majority of the ones I've seen for sale are forgeries.

A few years ago, I paid $400 for a used NZ SG# 6 (1/ Chalon on blued paper) - catalogue value ~$6,000. The stamp has reasonable margins but some minor thins. It looks fine from the front (which is the only side I now look at) and it completed the set of three in my collection.

The most I've spent on a stamp (off paper) was $147.87 in June 2011 for this U.S. Scott 1 -- it came with a PSE certificate.

The most paid for a stamp on cover was $141.50 in March 2012 for this U.S. Scott 64 with a Philatelic Foundation certificate.

Were it not for the accompanying certificates, I would have been reluctant to spend as much as I did for each.

Last year, I paid $130 for a very nice (4 margins)Black Penny stamp, with a red Maltese cross postmark, from a SCF friend. It's a pleasure to look at it.

Boy oh boy, this thread is big trouble! When my wife's eyes roll it looks like a slot machine. It's been a while since I bought one expensive stamp. the last several years I have been purchasing collections and boxes of postal history. The largest is $3000. US.

Great responses and some funny ones too lol.

Tony, whats a buyers premium?

And to think I was feeling guilty when I spent $ 13.00 on a stamp lol.

I like to think of it this way, I spend so much money on other junk where as if I were to spend some good money (relative to each person's pocket) on stamps, there are two positives:

1. You feel great, now that you have the stamp in possession and it has completed your series or country.
2. You know that you could sell it if need be and will probably make some money unless your really really unlucky like in Phil's case.

I recently told a friend that I started collecting again and he laughed at me. But here's whats really funny, he spends a ton on crappy electronics which have the worst depreciation rate of any type of product lol. I'm just waiting for the next time he complains about his gadget being worthless so I can burn one in...lol

Like some here my budget is limited so I look for bargains. But the most spent was my recent purchase of a US #77 Abe Lincoln (posted on another thread) for about $55, including shipping.

I paid $250.00 for a Canadian military mail item. I believe that is the most for any single item to the best of my memory - which isn't always good

I haven't been collecting nearly as long as most people. I paid $8.00 for a Canada Scott# 176. Once I find the right Bluenose my record will change.

This is a names have been changed to protect the not so innocent thread. I've stepped up in a couple occasions but even on those its been a good deal . However when I see US#1's and penny blacks as low as a few have paid it makes me want to get more agressive in my searching.
On my want list is a PB (not willing to go more than 30-40) a US1-2 , my last jubilee is the $1 lake and wow is it hard to get a break on.

Nitro i'm pretty sure you already do this but I just hit penny black search on ebay and it bought up some decent bids within your range. No harm in bidding even if you probably get beat. Who knows you might get lucky and get one for a decent amount.

Speaking of Penny Blacks...a member of our club purchased a worldwide album at our local auction house...inside which no one had noticed was an unused Penny Black and the blue 2 center..word has it that Henry Gitner in Middletown paid him $10,000 for the pair(and that from a dealer) thats the second time lightning has struck in our club..the first time a fellow who buys most of his postage at his small local post office was told that the USPS had sent her several imperforate rolls of the 26 cent Florida panther stamp scott 4141 and whether she should send them back ? I think there were 3 rolls and he took them all...he was gracious enough to sell imperforate pairs of the cat to club members for 5 bucks..i think he sold one roll to a dealer...no sense being in too much of a hurry..and he intended to take the post office lady out for dinner !
