Hi!
During the initial filling of ol Big Blue, I occasionally would come across a stamp that I just couldn't figure out where it belonged.

I ended up with about 20, and began the search project in earnest. Of course the best aid is the "Linn's Stamp Identifier" which (to me) is a must have for collectors.

All of these stamps ended up being identified thanks to the pics in the book, as opposed to the dictionary portion which I originally used.

And, with the exception of one from Crete, the rest were from mid east and Slavic countries ( I forgot that Ottoman referred to Turkey).

I also used the online Wikapedia to find when countries changed names or consolidated into other country names, which really pointed out the volatility of much of the worlds countries over the last 150 years.

For those of you new to the hobby, maybe some of the info above will help you out. For me, I just know its a great feeling to have an empty "I don't know where these belong" glassine envelope!

ENJOY!

Congratulations, mobilman44! Probably most of us have a full "I don't know where these belong" glassine like yours. Like yours, mine have a lot of Cyrillic letters. Thanks for your tips!

Karen

I forgot to mention having a 1955 two volume set of Scotts worldwide catalog. I got this off ebay, and since my WW collection goes no later than 1955, the books are a great help and go hand in hand with the Linn's Stamp Identifier book. By the way, new editions of that are less than $12 - money well spent.

Gotta say, wish I had access to this stuff when I collected in the late '50s and '60s!
