Hello all,
This is Iceland Scott 172.

The cancellation is inscribed "Tollu...." Google Translate says "tollu" means "tolls", so I'm pretty certain this is a revenue cancel, and not a town cancel. Can anybody confirm? Also, can anybody provide an image of the full cancel? Scott values this stamp at $16.00 for a town cancel, but only $1.90 for a revenue cancel.

Regards, Robert

The revenue cancel is "Tollur" in a rectangle.

This is one of the few revenue cancels that Scott will list. I assume because the cancel was applied to stamps that were used to pay the tax on parcels coming into Iceland.

Picking up on this older thread... I am new to this topic of revenue cancels for Iceland and Scott's treatment of them.
I see it in the classic catalog, but am unsure why the used rev cancel value is Less than a normal cancel on some higher demonination stamps (e.g., #186, #187).
But I see other references to the revenue cancel bringing higher value in the same series (# 181) (and in this article, http://www.jaysmith.com/Lists/Icela...Page-01.html )

Is it just rarity?
Please help me understand.

I think there are 2 things that come into play here.no.1 the percentage of the cancel on the stamp & No.2 the condition and centering of the stamp.

Thank you Perf12. Still confusing to me since the Scott catalog doesn't know anything about the cancel but still offers values both higher and lower with and without the rev cancel within the same series.

The "TOLLUR" cancel is found more frequently on the higher denomination stamps because those are the stamps most likely to be used to mail a parcel. Many of the lower denominatoion issues are actually valued higher with the revenue cancel, compared to a postal cancel, because they were less likely to be used on parcels and therefore found less frequently.

Revenue cancels both Iceland and Great Britain have been used by dealers for years to push up catalog values for years on lots or on a stamp offered to novice collectors .

I remember when I was still in school and purchased a British Colonies lot with many better catalog stamps ,only to find out years later there were many revenue cancel stamps .

I have a short document about the Iceland Tollur cancels, published by Barefoot, I believe. A Tollur cancel indicates payment of the customs duty on documents. Quoting, "one stamp (often the lowest value) received a postal cds to indicate the date, while the balance of stamps received 'Tollur' cancels."

"As the amounts to be paid as tax tended to be higher than normal postage rates, high value definitives saw frequent use, while the low aur values were used relatively infrequently and tended to receive the postal cds. It is a commonly held view that 'Tollur' cancels are all worth less than postally used stamps, but for the revenue collector, the low values or special issues are elusive and some command a premium well over those more commonly used as postage stamps."

I don't know if the Scott catalog values are in line with that last sentence.

Hope this helps your understanding,

Robert

i believe that if you had to write down everything that isn't in scott, you won't have time to look at stamps this lifetime.

same goes for every other catalogue, they're general information only, if you want to dive deep into an area you'll have to buy the country's specialized catalogue and work on translation if required.

Robert: Less Mail was Posted as Used in IceLand.
Therefore Used often much Higher SCV.
IceLand #172 o Used SCV (2023) = $16.

Revenue usage a Tollur Cancel on
Stamps affixed to: Revenue Tax (Duty)
in the Total Amount of Tax Collected.

Small Island: There were no separate
"Revenue & Excise" stamps as in
Larger Countries such as: (Example)
G.B. or Germany or Canada or USA etc.

Depends on # of Used (Rare versus
# of Revenue: Tollur Cancels (Common)

99% of Used Philatelists want to Buy:
IceLand Used with Postal Cancel: CDS, Slogan, etc.
(Avoid Buying Revenue: Tollur
as if it was: Damages Stamp)

Stamp Marketplace = 1% Revenue: Tollur.

Fact: Perfin_Paul IMHO: 1 of Few Buyers.
Tend to Buy Low: mostly, many Quite Common.

IceLand #172 o Revenue: Tollur cancel
Low SCV (2023) = $1.75 we don't
Pay % of Catalogue Value. … Why ?
( Most Likely: Not get our $$$ back )
( We know: i.e. Not too many Buyers )
Buy based on: Level of: Tollur Strike.

USED = (Wrong) Term. How ? …
Fools almost All:
Philatelists, Dealers +/- Sellers alike
( once Soaked off Revenue Custom Form )
looks & appears to be: Used Stamp.

Boxed "Tollur" PostMark means: you own:
IceLand Revenue: Tollur cancel (Common)
Paid Tax on Parcels imported into IceLand.

Lesser known Fact: Post Office Revenue
Tollur Cancel, also Helped to Prevent Revenue Stamp from being (2nd Time)
Re-Used in the Postal System.

Lastly a few Tollur do exist on Rarer Stamps, but pst Office often took many
Higher Denominations Stamps to Pay: Revenue (Duty) Total Tax to be: Paid.
Therefore quite often many High SCV
with: Revenue: Tollur cancel = (Common)

FYI: Exceptions to the Rule (Exist)

IMHO: Interested, but Worth only: $1.
Philatelist: Disabled (Low Income) No Job.
Limited Stamp Funds. Hobby of: Kings.
Collecting Fun: Revenue Tollur (Cheaper)
Side: IceLand (IsLand) Postal Used (Rare).
Tremendous Philatelic Knowledge.
