I have a modest collection of classic stamps from Egypt and would to specialize more and put the collection on album pages. What (readily available) catalogue can be recommended?
I am looking for the catalogue that mentions the most variations.
Thanks!
Peter

Hi Northwinds,

There are two to consider.

(1)Stanley Gibbons' Middle East Catalogue, which covers Egypt. and;
(2)The Stamps of Egypt by Leon Balian.

This last is excellent and is in full colour with extensive information. There are two volumes, but I believe volume two is an extended update of volume one. I have volume one, which covers 1866 to 1998. Fine hardcover copy bought used for £35 on ebay. Well worth scouting for. Vera Trinder have book 2 (2007) listed at £40. Whether they still have it or not I don't know. Worth a call or email.

Tel: 0207 257 9940 (UK code - don't know the Nederland link code)
email: vtrinder@aol.com

Happy hunting,
Terry

Vera Trinder is quite a lady.

Last I heard. about a couple of years ago is that she is in her mid 90s!

For as long as I can remember, I have seen her ads in the different British stamp magazines & papers.

Hi, Bujutsu,

I have several times been to Vera Trinder's shop in Bedford Street, just off the Strand and Covent Garden, London. Vera is Vera May Webster (94 if still around) and she became a director of Vera Trinder at the age of 71. Retired in 1991 I believe. The outfit is in the basement, a marvellous treasure cave, much smaller than nearby Stanley Gibbons, but with unsurpassed personal service. The company is now part of, or associated with, Prinz Publications who sell mounts, albums and all sorts of necessaries for the stamp buff. I would have loved to have met her, but sadly never did on any of my visits. I imagine a fabulous grande dame, exquisitely dressed and transported by Bentley driven by matching chauffeur.

Here is a photo of Vera Trinder's shop in Bedford Street, Covent Garden, London. The shop is in the basement, down the yellow lit staircase on the left of the photo.

I would recommend Nilepost
This is the BEST catalog will all the variations listed

Balian first edition is good too ... yet I won't recommend the 2nd edition ... it is not up to the level

Hi Nasr,

Would agree with you about Balian 2nd ed. Not affected as I stop at Egypt 1964 so 1st ed is fine. I would like a copy of The Nile Post, but the copies currenly listed on Bookfinder are....

Amazon.com £175.49
Amazon.com £190.58
Amazon.uk £856.68
Amazon.ca £862.31

These prices are way, way into outer space, much more than I am prepared to pay. So if you know of any copies at Earth prices please let me know, I would be most appreciative.

Michel (the Nord- und Ost Afrika, Ubersee Band 4 part) is pretty good as well, and will probably be the easiest to get in the Netherlands. I would like to get my hands on a Balian as well though, some day...

Thanks so much for all the replies/information!
I will try to compare a few of the catalogues (Scott/Michel/Gibbons) and than make a decision.
The Balian seems great but right now too expensive...

a current fair price will be in the range of 150$-200$

they are very hard to find but they do worth every penny of it

It took a few months but finally I got my hands on a fine example of a first edition Balian from 1998!
I got it for only 4.95 euro & 10 euro shipping on ebay last week!
I still don't understood that I was the only bidder, I will not disclose my actual bid but it was considerably higher than EUR 4.95 :)

Hi Northwinds,

You have got yourself an exceptional bargain. That is really very very cheap for a fine copy of Leon Balian's Egypt catalogue. Keep that up with your stamp buying and you will do very well indeed.

All best
Terry
