Hello folks I picked up a Lot on ebay of old European Stamps. However, I then decided to focus on QV and Commonwealth within my limited means. I only have an old Scott Catalogue for the Commonwealth countries as a result. However, I would like to use this thread to identify the stamps of the other countries I have with your help. I am very grateful for any help. I will begin with Sweden, this is part of the Swedish group that seemed older. The first stamp on the left has a denomination of 10.

That site lumps all the King Oscar II stamps into one category, under the 1885 stamp, pictured.
The stamps of 1891 have a different portrait and different frames. They are the 'same' only in that they depict a king facing left. The balance of the top row of kings, after the first one, are of the 1891 series.
The top right stamp, and all the kings in the second row, are from the 1910 series. (The second king is Gustav V.)
The top right stamp might have the highest CV of them all, but it still isn't much. Most of the stamps are at or near catalogue minimum, assuming there are no specialist items to be hunted up. I can't do any better with the smallish picture.
Also for what it is worth, these are short sets. There are other values in and around the ones you have shown. Still, nice to see. |

Thanks very much for the replies especially CJD with the details :)
I paid something like $ 8.00 for the whole lot of 350 odd old European Stamps. I still have a lot of Bulgaria, Germany, Czechoslovakia and others from this Lot.
The nice thing about this lot in general has been the overall condition of the stamps. These in particular are in very good condition in terms of perfs intact. |

I like a few of the cancels, too. You can't go too far wrong at 2 to 3 cents per stamp when buying classic material. That's a fair price, and tons of fun for the money. |

Many people collect the Oscars with different cancellations and there are cities that bring a nice premium. The Swedish stamps are easy to find with nice socked on the nose cancels. |

Well it was the lot that I bought to restart my collection, so I am very pleasantly surprised. :)
Another question in reference to the first stamp on the left with the heavy cancel. The one listed in stampedia is red but this one is practically orange / yellow and I could not find it even on another online catalogue.
Or maybe its listed with the color but just not shown.
And I absolutely love the 1890 cancel.
Having a tough time identifying and placing chronologically based on date, the German stamps in the lot. Will post a pic when I have some time.
Thanks again for the help. |

Hi Mindpsyche, The question regarding colour can be complex. Your stamp is 123 years old at least. Do you know what has happened to it during that whole period? It could be faded in the sun, have a water soluble ink or been affected by chemicals. Or it could be a Sweden Scott #45 which is listed as Pink or Rose |

If it is #45 it will have a posthorn on the back. The time period is right. I will try to look up the cancel. I think I have a book here someplace. |

Color can get even more complex if you pull out Facit...some of these Oscars have eight or more colors listed. And varieties aplenty. I'm sure the specialist literature goes even deeper... |
