They are large, simplified masks that have only one or two major features – a nose or cheeks – and rather small eyes. They help clarify different characters in a play.  |

Danmark 200th Anniversary of the National Museum March 28, 2007 One of the four stamps features a ca. 1920 Dayak hudoq mask from Mahakam River, Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo). The mask is made from wood, rattan, and hornbill feathers. This mask represents one of the animal spirits central to the ceremonial celebration of the sowing of rice.  |

Great Britain The 250th Anniversary of The British Museum in London October 7, 2003 One of the six stamps shows ancient Aztec or Mixtec mask of Xiuhtecuhtli. The mask is made of cedro wood and covered in turquoise mosaic with scattered turquoise cabochons.  |

South Korea Korean Art - Hahoe Mask November 15, 1979 The Hahoe mask dance is one of the folk dramas of Pungcheon Hahoe Village in Andong City, and dates from the Goryeo Dynasty (918 - 1392 A.D.). The drama combined shaman rituals and popular entertainment and was intended to please the local goddess and exorcise evil spirits.  |
