Stylized mask, designed by S. Avenali, printed by photogravure, and issued by Italy on June 30, 1967 as one of a set of two similar stamps publicizing the 10th Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, Scott No. 963.

Greek Mythology - Gorgon Mask

The stamp features a Gorgon mask returned to Algeria from Tunisia. This white marble mask was originally discovered in Annaba (formerly the Roman African city of Hippo Regius) in east Algeria. Gorgon is a female creature in Greek mythology. Images of the Gorgons were put upon objects and buildings for protection.
