I found this in a 1965 first day cover. The ghost-like image at upper left is a yellowed newspaper clipping announcing the 5c Hoover stamp, stapled to her request. The "second" enclosure, presumably, was the nickel. Unreal!

I remember all these things we had to do to get a first day cover for your collection. I also collected Polar philately and getting these covers from Little America (Operation Deep Freeze). By the time I get my cover back, I had already forgotten that I did it.

I remember as a kid sending a self addressed letter with change taped to a card to get the first day covers. Did not have such a well written note attached but still got the cover anyway.

I did it, too! It was the only way to get a first day cover from the post office back then. Remember, you didn't have the option of buy stamps at a later date and a "grace period" for sending them in for first day of issue postmarks. You had to have the postage and the envelopes mailed to the first day city BEFORE the day of issue or you were out of luck.
