CAR is not an abbreviation - it is simply the word "car" Railway mail cars were built to be mobile post offices. Essentially they were converted box cars where the postal clerks sorted and cancelled mail while the train was going on its route. This speeded up the mail in that it did not have to wait to be processed in a regular post office. CAR 2 would simply be the designation for the second of many RPO mail cars that were operated on that railroad.
SD is Southern Division
ED is Easten Division
SR is Short Run which would have been a train that did not travel the full length of its route.
