Hi all,

I found this item and I am wondering what is the date in the cancel. Can someone help me, please?

In my opinion it's a pair CSA #11 and date is 11-JUL-1862, Albany.
Very hard to say if it is really 1862. I have nothing to compare.

Thanks for all opinions

If it is authentic (there are vast quantities of forgery CSA stamps and covers out there) the stamps appear to be a Jeff Davis 10 cent stamp, Type I, which would make them Scott 11. These Jeff Davis portrait stamps were issued in 1863 and 1864 so that would make the date 1863 or later. The cancellation is so poor around the date that I don't think you could ever tell the year with any confidence unless the letter that was inside is still there and it has a date on it, or unless there is a dated backstamp. These stamps are not especially valuable since so many millions were printed and they sell on ebay for modest amounts which makes it a toss up as to whether you would like to pay to have the cover expertised. Without an expertization I think that most collectors shy away because of so many forgeries out there.

I love these Confederate stamps, but I'm certainly no expert. I do find interesting the fingerprint on the envelope running under the right stamp. Is there any hint of the print actually on that stamp? If it is not on the stamp itself (it doesn't seem to be in the scan, but it's hard to tell) then I would be suspicious of the stamps being added later. Of course the finger print could have occurred in 1862 or 3 when the letter was written (in which case you've got a 150+ year old fingerprint, which is kinda cool!) and before the stamps were affixed, but it does give me something else to ponder.

I've got a scan from an online source of the marriage license/certificate of Richard Hines and Georgia E. Shackelford, married Dec 1, 1864 in Early County, Georgia.

Her name is on the document twice, once spelled Georgia and then Georgie, which fits nicely with your cover.
