The Scott catalog does refer to the numbers on the back of the Hermes heads as both "figures" and "control numbers".
In the section headers, Scott uses "figures", but in the special footnote at beginning of the Greece section Scott calls them "control numbers". |

Value of the stamp is 40 lepta and 40 is printed on the back,if you collect Spanish Colonies { like me } which have a real control number on the backs ,its hard to call a denomination printed on the back a control number .But in your defense the Greek HERMES catalog calls it a control number . |

There are different types of control numbers. Numbers do not have to be unique in order to be called a control number (i.e., a control number is not necessarily a serial number). A control number is simply associated with a particular stamp or a particular group of stamps. Therefore a control number could be a serial number, a lot number, an inventory number, a security number...
The "control" aspect for the Hermes head stamps is that the number on the back should match the denomination of the stamp. So this "control" number is more like a security number. |

My question is about the color of the number 40. |

Interesting,
I haven't heard of control numbers being 'pasted' or 'glued' on though. Is this a number seen through transparent paper and not pasted??? I am interested to see more on this.

Thanks for clarifying that. I wondered if printers would go to that trouble with every stamp lol
