I'm not too familiar with these stamps..hopefully someone can shed some light on them. I would like to know if they are real or fake. I have others but they say facsimile on the backs or the front. These ones don't.

The CSA stamp is a later printing from an altered plate. The plate from the 5¢ stamp, as well as a 1¢ John C. Calhoun stamp were changed to reflect an increased postal rate, but were never used. The plates were found years later and there were various private printings in different colours. |

Hi, I don't have a clue if these are real or not. BUT, they do look "too good to be true", and I would definitely want an expert's opinion. |

The Boyd's local looks like a reprint (or fake?) of the 1855 issue. The original (Scott #10L11) is on olive green paper.
[EDIT: Typo, should be #20L11. The reprints were made in the 1880's, in lighter colors/paper, but I have nothing to compare to. Yours is definitely not an original, likely a reproduction (not reprint).] |

I'll weigh in again. The first stamp, though I'll admit to being out of my depth here, I believe is on the wrong paper. The image itself seems closest to the 20L11 (L58) issued in 1855. But these according to Scott's were issued on green paper. In fact most of the Boyd's stamps were issued on coloured paper. But most significant is the type of paper. The paper of your stamp appears to be made from wood pulp, which, while it was being developed during 1840s and 50s, did not come into wide commercial use until the the late 1860s. During the 1850s even newspapers were still using cotton rag based papers. So, no expert, but I think it's a fake. |

jamesw Interesting Even if they are fakes. They look great to me. Nice to have. Nice topic of research back in the young age of postal history. |

Ya..The paper is what's getting me. It does look like paper that would be used at that time. But if the design itself was done at the same time then it is so very close to the original. I'll have to give credit to whoever made this. |

Most of the locals were re done by taylor who pretty well forged copied anything stamp related. There is a good following for his works. I believe James mentions him on his post of the confederate stamps. There were issues done on wood pulp paper that are re issues not fakes but its a fine line. |
