What kind of error on the left stamp? Light print? Missing step? other...

I do not think it is an error, just a different stamp. There are at least 6 different types. You can start by looking if ou can find a watermark.

CDNUM------the stamp is called the "PENNY UNIVERSAL" ,the world expert is a poster on chatrooms ,his name is ROLY RJ .This stamp has all kinds of varities and types ,more than we can cover here ,if you GOOGLE or search "n.z.1901-1909 PENNY UNIVERSAL" you will find ROLY's research .

The above stamp was also used as one of the first successful machine coils in 1905. Not the earliest, but more successful than the earlier attempts in the U.S. and Netherlands.

Hi Bujutsu,

This is a very interesting study.

These 2 stamps look very good and are beautiful. The left one look W7-Cowan paper. They look like made with fresh wool lamb paper :-)

wait a minute-----I though some stamps of New Zealand was made with grass ,thats paper made from grass,no not the kind you smoke .!
