Why doesn't Scott list Persian stamps? I know Persia changed its name to Iran in 1935, but what about before 1935?

So, one would need a stamp catalog published before 1935 to see listings for 'Persia" Listing from 1931 Stanley Gibbons Airpost Catalog: |

Scott has always listed countries under their current name regardless of regime changes and the like. |

But, that is not true for Scott.... Cambodia has changed to the Khmer Republic and now is called Kampuchea. However, you will not find this country listed in the K's, but rather in the C's under Cambodia.
Sometimes looking at the index in the back of the volume can get you where you what to go. |

No, the official name for Cambodia is still Cambodia. Kampuchea was called when the Khmer Rouge ruled in the late 70's. It is still Cambodia. |

Here is a stamp(that I could find online) that showcases the name "Cambodia" from 2009. This link is not allowed by the Staff .net/images/f/1205/139/Return-to-freedom.jpg) |

Actually, the Scott International Part I 1840-1940 album still has the stamps under Persia ;-) |

Persia didn't change to Iran until 1979. So if you have a catalog that is older than 1979 you won't find Iran. |

Stanley Gibbons don't even list Iran (Persia) in their Middle East catalogue, they put in in one of their Asia catalogues. Bit of a bummer if you have to pay around £40 ($61) for their Middle East catalogue. I really do hate the SG catalogues so much (I feel they are confusing and poorly laid out) that I have started putting together a reference of specialised catalogues for the areas that interest me. Any suggestions for the best catalogue for the USA first issues to 1945 or there about would be welcomed. I don't mind older catalogues as current CVs are not so accurate most of the time anyway, but would prefer colour illustrations.

Edited to add: The first book I bought on USA stamps some years back was America's Stamps by Maud and Miska Petersham. I love it. It was the book that got me collecting the US stamp issues. TC. |
