I usually scan to check the perforations with a computer program that I bought (EZ Perf) I cover the stamps with a piece of matte black paper and open the scans in Irfanview, darken the background to remove any glare and add a bit of contrast to improve the view of the stamps' edges. The program also has a straightening tool.
