having trouble identifying country of origin with these stamps, any help would be greatly appreciated

interesting that red overprint is in English.

the only thing I recognize on these stamps is 1920 - "DAM" on the cancellation, I thought Damascus, but nothing found Scott.

incidentally, both sets of stamps found loose (under Turkey) as I'm sorting through my 30 year old collection.

"Dam" would be the first 3 letters of "Damas," i.e., cancelled in what is now Syria.

The red overprints are Jordan #289-290, denominated in fils; if others are denominated in mils, they would be #286B-286C.

Yes, but yours are denominated in fils, so therefore #289-290; these issues confuse a lot of people.
