Hello All,
I'm trying to understand and find information about the sheets of Russian stamps below. I gather that they are Scott 119, 120, 121, 123, 126 and 128 - each in imperforate sheets of 25.

These are the provisional government stamps of the civil war period. The problems I can see id that Scott lists these as having vertical lozenges of varnish on the face, but I don't see any on any of the sheets. Also, each sheet does have a watermark of diagonal lines that criss-cross to form a diamond pattern across the whole sheet, but this isn't listed in Scott's. Is this something not listed in Scott's or am I misinterpreting something in the catalogue?

Thanks!
Will

If I am correct, that pattern is in fact the lozenges and they show quite well in watermark fluid. I will let vasia confirm as I am still learning Russia but that is my understanding

stamps101 is absolutely correct. The "vertical lozenges" of varnish are the same thing as the "diamond pattern" mentioned by Will. This is NOT a watermark.

Thanks to you both. It didn't make the connection last night that lozenges equals diamond pattern. I was expecting the varnish to be like on some of the early Austrain-Hungarian Empire stamps, but it's not quite the same - more dull on the Russian stamps. I saw the pattern without watermark fluid and it's does come across as a watermark when you look at it, but when I used some watermark fluid just now the pattern is actually lighter than the surrounding paper. It's like a negative, compared to a watermark. Interesting stuff.
