I went to several antique shops today and found a variety of interesting postcards, with this being the best.

I bought it because it's from Lundy, but now I see it's also a "Dear doctor" card. The picture side shows some Lundy ponies grazing.

(I also got 4 local DPOs, 1 1921 tied christmas seal, 1 really interestinng cancel and a postard from Lebanon- not bad for 75 cents to $1 each!)

Thanks to everyone for these recent posts. I've really been enjoying them, and learning a lot, too.

Bas & Wadmalatz: You give all of us great hope!

New12collector: I think the most amazing thing is that they were reasonably priced in an antique shop! I usually find that owners are overly optimistic about the values of old stamps and covers and price accordingly ... I get a little discouraged going into those places, although there are some not far from me, and I really should give them the once-over periodically.

Yes, that is a perfect example of a "Dear Doctor" card, all look more or less the same, except different countries and different stamps.

See www.deardoctorpostcards.com created by my friend Tom Fortunato.

I'm looking forward to a little bit spring-ier weather so I can hit the antique shops and look for some postcards. I'd love to come across some of those dear doctor cards.

Nice Dear Doctor PC and very interesting. Noted the Lundy PM on the Puffin stamp but it was also posted from Bristol, England.

Note about Lundy Stamps
Mr. Bob Harper (Great Britain) has mentioned that the stamps, or more properly 'carriage labels' issued by Lundy were not just valid for internal postage within the island (it is only 3.5 miles long and half a mile wide and 99.9% of the residents live in the sole village). They were introduced in 1929 to pay for the cost of handling and shipping the mail to the UK mainland (a ship ride of about 2 hours these days). and until the 1980's were also fixed to incoming mail.

Interestingly, apart from a period from 1954 until about 1961 they were issued only for this purpose. The 7 years mentioned are called the 'Wallpaper period' by Lundy collectors and occurred because the island 'outsourced' its stamp production to an agent named Anton Medaware who produced a vast surplus which were aimed at collectors.

Slightly off topic but I think these Puffins are from the same Lundy set as the one on your Doctor card.

As requested here is the front of the Lundy Dear Doctor card, showing some Lundy ponies peacefully grazing.

As well as the local postmarks. (Heath, North Orange and 2 from West Northfield.)

The tied Chrismas seal and what I consitered to be an interesting cancel.

And I can confirm that is definitely Lundy Lighthouse in the background.
